The growing statistics on the number of autistic children in our society today are quite alarming. Some reports have it that autism is now occurring in an estimated 1 in 150 births in the United States.
At the same time, more and more cases where children diagnosed with autism who are being helped by Chiropractic are continuing to be recorded. The study here of a 3-year-old child who was helped by Chiropractic intervention is another such important case as reported by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research.
This child had been diagnosed with autism about 1 year prior to her first visit to a chiropractor. At the time of her examination, she had social interaction skills that were below the norm for a child her age. She also had learning difficulties, and her language skills consisted only of communicating by screaming and outbursts of temper tantrums. She was not able to communicate through speech that would be normal for her age.
The child’s mother was able to offer some information regarding the onset of the child’s autism. It was her observation that the symptoms were noticeable following the girl’s first set of vaccinations when she had reactions that were different than before and after she had slept for 24 hours.

In all, the child had 28 Chiropractic visits spread over a 10 week period. Initially, the girl was very apprehensive about her adjustments and didn’t like to lie down on the chiropractor’s table. However, this fear was all but gone by her 5th visit and she was soon lying on the table by herself and was happy to take hold of her Chiropractor’s hand.
During her 10th visit, her mother said that the child began to verbalize for the first time.
Later in the week, she even started to laugh. This improvement continued on throughout the first month of care when the child began to show expressions of joy and spontaneity while being less hyperactive. Meanwhile, her posture was improving, too.
“This case report illustrates how an improvement respectively in both subjective and objective behavioral patters and nerve system symmetry follow Chiropractic care in a child with autism,” said the authors of the study. And, with the growing evidence that Chiropractic can benefit children with autism, it only makes sense that every child who shows symptoms of the disorder should be examined by a chiropractor to determine if help is possible.

The Food and Drug Administration has just released a set of warnings that identify a new problem caused by the drug industry. It’s named the Serotonin Syndrome.

Serotonin Syndrome occurs when the body produces too much serotonin, a naturally occurring substance in body. Antidepressant drugs like Prozac and Paxil are known as SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). They affect moods by keeping serotonin active when it would normally be removed from the system after performing its normal functions in the nervous system.

According to the FDA warning, dangerously high serotonin levels may occur when a patient on a SSRI such as Paxil or Prozac takes this prescription in conjunction with other medications known as triptans.

Triptans are usually used to bring relief to migraine headache sufferers. They include Relpax, Axert and Frova. These drugs, introduced in the 1990s, bring temporary migraine relief through the dilation of cranial blood vessels.

The artificially high levels of serotonin resulting from this combination of drugs can create a whole new set of symptoms referred to as Serotonin Syndrome. Some symptoms are even life-threatening, according to the FDA warning. Serotonin Syndrome may include restlessness, hallucinations, loss of coordination, fast heartbeat, rapid changes in blood pressure, increased body temperature, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The FDA is warning patients and doctors alike to be aware of the problems that can occur when these types of medications are intentionally or unknowingly combined. This problem may arise when two different doctors are involved in writing prescriptions for the patient, for instance.

These are very positive findings for individuals who wish to avoid a reliance on drugs to treat the pain caused by this condition.

“This study shows there is something real about Acupuncture and its effects on fibromyalgia,” said Dr. David Martin, the Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist who was the study’s lead investigator. “Our study was performed on patients with moderate to severe fibromyalgia. It’s my speculation that if Acupuncture works for these patients with recalcitrant (hard to treat) fibromyalgia – where previous treatments had not provided satisfactory relief – it would likely work for many of the millions of fibromyalgia patients.”

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder with symptoms that include widespread pain, tenderness and stiffness in the muscles. It is generally accompanied by fatigue, headache and sleep disturbances. Fifty patients for whom symptom-relief treatments had failed were selected for the study. Mayo Clinic physicians who specialize in pain management randomly assigned subjects to a group that would receive Acupuncture or a group that would receive simulated Acupuncture (treatment to a sham Acupuncture point). Subjects were not informed which group they were in.

Each person filled out a symptom-assessment questionnaire prior to the first treatment and then received six treatments over a period of two to three weeks. Follow-up data was collected from all patients immediately after treatment. Then, one month after care ended and then again seven months after treatment, they were re-interviewed to find out about their current levels of pain and other symptoms.

Following the initial treatments, symptoms of pain, fatigue and anxiety were most significantly improved in the patients given true Acupuncture. These patients experienced the largest improvements one month after their care ended. At the seventh-month follow-up interview, some patients reported that their discomfort had returned if no additional Acupuncture care had been administered.

Dr. Martin believed the study patients would have seen sustained improvement with ongoing Acupuncture. “It’s a reasonable expectation that if they received more Acupuncture after two to three months, they would have maintained their improvement,” he said. “Acupuncture usually works for about three months, and then patients need a less-intensive treatment session. These patients would need more acupuncture periodically for as long as they experience fibromyalgia symptoms.”

One such case was recently documented in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. Here was a case where the child suffered from the condition known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), which is a lung condition that can be quite serious and results in breathing problems for the premature baby. The administration of oxygen is the usual treatment for the newborn child. Treatment is delivered in the hospital’s intensive care unit and is administered continuously for the first 28 days. A 120 day hospital stay is most likely and administration of antibiotics and continued oxygen treatments are required when the child is finally discharged.

In the case under study, the child who was born 24 days prematurely followed this course of treatment after she was diagnosed with BPD. Oxygen was administered, antibiotics were included, and she was nourished with a feeding tube for 3 months. Finally, after 17 weeks she was discharged and oxygen
treatments were continued at home.

The girl was brought to a chiropractor for examination some 3 months after her release from the hospital. A Chiropractic exam showed that she weighed in at just 12 pounds now some 7 months after her birth. Her condition was described as listless. She had pasty skin and sinus congestion; her breathing was short and rapid, and there was no eye contact reported. Plus, she was constipated and colicky.

After just one adjustment, the baby’s mother noticed immediate changes. The baby became livelier and was able to use her abdominal muscles to hold her legs up. The colic subsided and she easily passed gas for the first time. The second visit resolved congestion problems and her sinuses began to drain.

After her third adjustment, the baby made some loud noises and started to draw air in more easily. With such positive results, Chiropractic care continued for a period lasting several months. The changes to the child during this period of time were quite remarkable. Daily improvements were noted – such things as more head control, better facial color, regular bowel movements and a much improved breathing ability.

The end result was a healthy child who no longer needed any antibiotics. She never needed to be readmitted to the hospital during or following her Chiropractic treatment. By this time, she was able to roll over easily on her own and no symptoms of her BPD returned. Chalk up another victory for Chiropractic treatment with the result being a child who was well on her way to being able to live a happy and healthy life.

When it comes to Eastern Medicine vs. Western Medicine, there is quite a different approach to needles. And, in a recent survey comparing the Eastern Acupuncture needle approach to the Western drug injection needle approach to neck pain, surprisingly it was Acupuncture that came out ahead.

SpineUniverse recently conducted a survey to determine the favored treatment for neck pain and to compare patient satisfaction with a variety of treatment methods. As this survey was conducted in the United States where Western medical treatment and drugs are often the favored treatment, one item of comparison stood out and caused surprise.

This portion of the study compared Acupuncture to injection therapy for neck pain. Of the 310 persons in the study, 43.6% of the patients were satisfied or very satisfied with Acupuncture. What surprised researchers was that only 41.3% said that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their drug treatment.

While the percentage difference between those who preferred Acupuncture over injections is not large, the results were quite surprising to research personnel bases on two main factors: The first had to do with the fact that while vast amounts of money are invested in pharmacological research and injection medication, participants yet favored Acupuncture. The second factor had to do with the fact that many Westerners are still a bit wary of Acupuncture, but those who responded found it to be quite favorable.

On the other hand, the results may be paralleling the growing acceptance of Acupuncture by patients and the medical community. Many are finding that the traditional Chinese art of healing seems to make patients happy and reduce their pains. Once people realize that Acupuncture helps to contribute to the total health of the person and does so with needles that cause little or no discomfort, they are more amenable to giving it a try.

“,” said Laurie Morse, a licensed acupuncturist and Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine. “Many people worry about all the needles, but they’re actually much thinner (almost hair thin) than injection needles. Additionally, you can’t possibly have a reaction to medication because no medication is used in Acupuncture.”

Inactive stomach muscles may be more of a “pain in the back” than people realize. It’s recently been shown that people with Low Back Pain conditions, as well as those who may develop this problem in the future, can trace the cause to the abdominal area.

The areas of the body that are often overlooked in exercising are the deepest muscles of the abdomen. They are a tough band of muscles located along each side of the torso. Correct activation of these muscles has been associated with stabilizing the spine in the lower back where the spinal column and the hip bones meet.

A recent study was conducted on 17 young men to determine if this muscle group was functioning properly. By asking each of the subjects to flex and extend their shoulders, researchers were able to measure the proper muscle response.

Following the test, each person received a Chiropractic adjustment to the lower back area on the side of the body that showed decreased joint movement. The test was then repeated and resulted in a 34.8% improvement in proper muscle function.

According to the researchers, the study suggests that using such a series of tests can detect impaired abdominal muscle response. They also said this testing could find a potential for lower back problems even if a person has no current symptoms.

Chiropractors are trained in the proper structure of the skeletal system as well as correct muscle function. Exercises to strengthen the abdominal area and provide a person with a total plan for improved physical conditioning can be provided by a Chiropractor.

Lifestyle choices have been found to be contributing factors to cancer. Living healthy and the incorporation of exercise in a person’s life are known to reduce the chances of a person getting many forms of cancer. Chiropractors are experts in providing lifestyle options that encourage healthy, drug-free living that promote longterm well-being.
However, when a person does contract cancer, there is evidence that Chiropractic treatment can be of benefit to a person in living more comfortably and reducing the aches and pains that some experience with this dreaded disease.
One such report involves a 57-year-old man. He was in the later stages of terminal pancreatic cancer when he visited a chiropractor. While his treatment was not able to save his life at this stage, it was documented that the man’s pain was considerably reduced.
According to the article, “In this case Chiropractic care was able to provide significant pain relief, reduce the amount of pain medication being taken (as well as their potential side effects), and temporarily improve the quality of life for a patient with terminal cancer.”
Another patient, this one a 54-year-old man, was suffering from upper back pain following lung cancer surgery. This painful condition had been going on for over a year with no relief in sight. Quite remarkably, only two visits to a chiropractor brought relief to this individual. Additionally, he was able to discontinue all of his pain medication as well.
According to the article, the principles of Chiropractic applied to these individuals put each patient into a condition where the healing ability of their body was able to again work to its maximum potential. While the person’s pain was not directly treated, the body was, and this allowed it to go to work to reduce the pain and the need for medication.
“These clinical examples offer two specific instances of how Chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patient’s life,” the article stated. Persons suffering from any stage of cancer and dealing with pain as a result of the disease would be wise to consult a chiropractor to help maximize their body’s healing powers to fight the disease and assist with the discomfort.

Over-the-counter painkillers including aspirin, ibuprofen and particularly acetaminophen, can raise blood pressure and thus the risk of heart disease among men, according to an article in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The new research, which covered four years among more than 16,000 healthy men, reinforces an earlier 2002 study that found the same commonly used non-narcotic analgesics raised blood pressure in women.
Men who used analgesics 6 to 7 days per week were compared with nonusers. The study also observed similar results when the number of pills per week was analyzed rather than frequency of use in days per week.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, which include ibuprofen and naproxen, created a 38 percent greater risk of hypertension (raised blood pressure) among the participants than among men who did not take analgesics.
Those taking similar amounts of acetaminophen, which is sold generically, and as Tylenol TM, were 34 percent more likely to develop hypertension. Similar dosages of aspirin caused a 26 percent greater incidence of raised blood pressure.
More NSAIDs, even more hypertension Men who took 15 or more NSAID pills a week were 48 percent more likely than nonusers to have high blood pressure. The drugs can affect the ability of blood vessels to expand, and may also cause sodium retention –– two factors that can both raise blood
pressure.
Being overweight reduced the risk from acetaminophen, but raised the risk from NSAIDS, the researchers found.
“This is a potentially preventable cause of high blood pressure,” Dr. John Forman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who led the study, said in a statement.
Men who are advised by a doctor to take an aspirin a day to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke should not stop taking them without first discussing the risks and benefits with their doctor.

Long time patients of Dr. Bannard will hardly be able to believe the transformation his office been undergoing the last few weeks. A much needed remodel of the office is underway at this time and is nearing completion. The footprint of the office has been changed and now has a much more open and inviting design. There will be new space to serve patients that need extra therapy as well as room for massage and acupuncture clients.

Additionally there is a beautiful new cherry front desk topped with granite and surrounded by pendant lights that you will see as soon as you enter the office. Other improvements include recessed lighting, new paint, carpet and laminate hardwood floors. Renovations should be completed soon and we look forward to serving our patients in this comfortable new office environment.

This is especially evident cases when an accident or injury has occurred to a child or adult who previously showed no signs of any of the difficulties with concentration associated with ADHD.

Case in point of this study involves a child of 6 years of age, a person of any age could suffer the same lack of concentration ability following an accident or a severe blow. This could occur through an auto mishap, a slip-and-fall injury, sports contact or even a work-related trauma that is part of daily life. While drugs are now frequently prescribed by the medical community to handle the ensuing “attention” problems, a Chiropractic adjustment may really be all that is necessary for normal function to return.

A case discussing the events that happened to this child who struck his head while on the playground was recently presented by an Australian-American Chiropractic group. The child was knocked unconscious by the impact and, in the months that followed, his teachers noted his concentration problems, inattentiveness and even disruptive behavior. The boy developed all of the classic symptoms so commonly labeled as ADHD. He was unable to sit still in the classroom and his grades began to plunge.

Drugs were a main part of the medical prescription for handling the boy. Unfortunately, but expectedly, these did not bring any lasting relief or help to the child. In spite of the powerful drugs, his headaches and neck pains persisted. Finally, 18 months after the accident, his mother brought him to a chiropractor. It may seem remarkable, but the boy only required 3 visits to the chiropractor over a 3 week period to put him back on the road to good health and classroom success. The diagnosis was a subluxation, a partial dislocation of the vertebrae. He continued with regular checkups and after 9 months continued to do very well.

An accident or blow which involves the head, neck and back being in pain is increasingly being documented as a trigger or aggravating factor to ADHD. This evidence and case studies such as this one can be of great value in spreading the word that drugs are not the universal solution for the handling of ADHD as has become so common in the world today. When drugs are administered, the concentration problems that are not handled can even lead to further accidents and more subluxations. Thus, the drugging solution could lead to a vicious circle that includes more injuries, more subluxations and an continued worsening of the ADHD symptoms.

However, when the symptoms of ADHD are handled through Chiropractic, tremendous benefits frequently occur. First off, the pain and discomfort is either reduced or eliminated for the patient. Next, the relief provided to the nervous system through the correction of the subluxation are also extremely beneficial.
Concentration ability often returns quickly, and the person gets more enjoyment out of life while doing better at school or at work, whatever the case may be.
Chiropractic adjustments of the person suffering from, so called, ADHD can lead to a better overall state of health and increased productivity without drug intervention.Again, the simple motto for handling such ADHD issues should resound, “Say no to drug and say yes to Chiropractic!”
